It might be a shot in the dark,but I thought I'd see if anyone here might know of any gigs(clubs,undergrounds,etc.) available in Vancouver during that time? I'm really lovin’ the new Rasa album - Saffron Blue - it has a unique Euro-Indian sound. A nice meld of spiritual and sensual… with sitar, sarangi, violin, cello, rhythm and synthesizer.

Music is by Hans Christian and chants by Kim Water.

San Geronimo – On Saturday, April 21st the San Geronimo Valley Community Center will host a large-scale youth-led arts festival called Sprout Fest including an outdoor concert open to all ages at 6pm. The event will begin with an exciting performance of West African music by internationally-known musician Amadou Camara and his band Baga Bae. The event wil be emceed by major recording artist Radio Active (best known for his work with Michael Franti & Spearhead) Other performers will include DJ Frankie Fresh, hip-hop emcee D.U.S.T., Urban Apache B-Boys, Capoeira Mandinga, fire dancer Shatzi Rainbow and spoken word poet Jahan Khalighi as well as funk/jazz/jam band Greenroom. Aspiring artists in their teens and twenties can compete for $100 cash prize in categories including “MC (rock tha crowd)”, “B-Boy (1on1) Battle” and a graffiti competition. The performance finale will be a hip-hop collaboration jam by local youth musicians, emcees, beat boxers and DJ's -- with one of their heroes, Radio Active. The community-wide evening festival will be open to all ages to provide an opportunity for families and friends to attend together to see mastery of these art forms and spark intergenerational dialog and understanding. The showcase will take place in the outdoor courtyard of the San Geronimo Valley Community Center, at 6350 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard in San Geronimo, 20 minutes west of San Rafael. thanks to all that came out for filastine's performance last month - it was a truly inspiring set for a comfortably packed house. we will have some photos up soon on the roots and wires website...

this saturday, september 30th, we return with the ninth round of stateless, again at SF's amnesia. for our live act, we are excited to bring you the wailing junktet, performing brazillian rhythms on found junk objects... they were killer at the recent novo sounds event (at the supper club)...

our guest dj is vanka, who hosts the misturada event at club six. here's a blurb that xlr8r's tomas palermo wrote about him:

"DJ Vanka has tapped into a vibe that clubs like Bar Rhumba in London have been promoting for years: organic and electronic Afro-Latin dance music. Stateless SF @ Amnesia - Fri 6/30/06 - Featuring Micropixie and Jeff Stott

First off - thanks to everyone that made it out to a packed Amnesia for our last Stateless event. It was a great evening - mad props to Kush Arora for his next-step ragga-bhangra set!

We will be celebrating our six-month anniversary on Friday, June 30, again at Amnesia (b/w 19th and 20th on Valencia, in SF's Mission). We will start at 9 PM and go until 2 AM - the cover is only $5. This should be an extra-special event, as we have two amazing headliners, as well as video artists this time.

First, desi space-alien Micropixie (www.micropixie.com) will be playing her ethereal sounds, with live tabla accompaniment and laptop beats. Then, Jeff Stott, MC Rai producer and founder of Embarka Records (www.embarkarecords.com) , will be performing beats and oud, with a violinist and arabic percussion.

Michael (The Worker) and I (Special Agent K) will be dropping opening and closing sets - spinning roots, dub, bhangra, outernational breaks and jungle, afrojazz, dancehall, dubstep and so on...

I'll be doing my usual soundsystem business, with siren unit and analogue delays. I'm also planning on dropping some dubplates of original south asian dubstep and drum and bass.

Finally, we will be incorporating a visual component. This will include a video piece by Sue C , a photographer and video artist (www.orthlorng.com/sue/live.html) who works with a combination of analog and digital processes, doing "live improvisational video performances using a custom built system in the max/msp/jitter software environment"... We will also be joined by a guest visual artist, Yasi, who is a member of the Flaming Lotus Girls (www.flaminglotus.com) and who will be providing some live visual pieces to complement the evening. The visual element should be a nice addition to our developing event.

I'm still developing my dubwise tabla and midi footcontroller setup, so expect to see this as part of my set in the next few months!

So please come out and join us for an intimate evening of bass frequencies, outernational beats, live performance and visual art!

The night will be a celebration of not only the return
meeting of these two artist, but also it will be the
first time Dub Gabriel is in New York since moving to
Berlin Germany 8 months ago.

and music creating. as well as Trumpet maestro Satish

[ie'06] is this summer's inaugural UK installment of the annual Indian Electronica Festival and will be held from August 24 -27 in London. This international festival also takes place earlier in the summer in Toronto, Canada and will bring to the United Kingdom a never-before-seen array of cutting-edge international artists.

Festival programming includes; keynote speeches and discussion panels featuring unique perspectives of South Asian music-industry leaders (such as Bobby Friction, Karsh Kale, Pathaan etc...) and

Thanks to all that made it out to the last Stateless, which was also a part of Dhamaal's Sights and Sounds Festival. Amnesia was once again packed with thick sonics and a diverse crowd of revelers and music afficiandos. MC Rai played a beautiful arabic set and the DJ crew (Radiohiro and DJ Warp) from Chicago was solid...

We'll be steppin' forward with the fourth episode of Stateless on Friday April 28, again at Amnesia (853 Valencia, between 19th and 20th). This go round will feature this following line-up:

(1) Tomas (XLR8R) will open the night with dubwise and minimal techno sounds...

(2) Resident DJ, Special Agent K (Roots and Wires Hi-Fi, Stateless), will drop a set of diverse sounds, spanning bhangra, ragga breaks, asian massive to drum and bass... all while dropping dubwise samples, and manipulating effects, a siren unit, and analogue delay live... This time, he will also drop some original productions, highlighting recently recorded indian classical talent from New Delhi, India - inna dubstep/breakbeat version!

(3) Tim Barsky is our featured live act. Tim is a traditional Ashkenazi storyteller and oral historian who has been getting increasing attention for his unique performance style, which blends hip-hop, street theatre, and Jewish folklore. He's also the world's first battle flutist! Using just a flute and a microphone, Tim can beatbox, "scratch", manipulate beats, drop classics, and play up to 8 lines at the same time, without loops or sampling. Taking the aesthetic of the battle DJ and integrating it into the flute, Tim is pioneering the art form of woodwind percussion.

* This studio doesnt allow any outside shoes during the class. You are allowed to wear shoes such as ballet slippers or something similar that you wear only indoors. However the floors are sprung since they practice capoeira there so its comfortable to dance barefoot.

Smithmonger Bio:

Smithmonger was originally a professional trumpet player who trained at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music before turning his attention to underground dance music. He moved to London 5 years ago and has turned heads with past releases on wicked labels such as Loaded, TCR, 10Kilo, Hooj Choons, and Bushwakka's Oblong.

In the last three years, it's safe to say everyone from Coxy to Boy George has had a Smithmonger tune in their box and Monger has officially made his entry to the big leagues. The year's started off with a massive Breaks release on Boombox in January called 'Hey'. It was caned by the likes of Lee Coombs and Atomic Hooligan. This was followed by a stormer on 10kilo called 'Seen it all Before' which went in with a bullet at No. 1 in DJ Mag's Breaks chart and No. 18 on the UK Cool Cuts Chart. Oblong released 'Get it Oun' in May to huge reactions (Number 3 in Carl Cox's June chart) and Paul has just signed another Tech-House project to Visitor in Belgium. Ministry of Sound released a wicked breaks 12'' in August (No 6 in the breaks chart) and Paul has come on board with Fingerlickin' Records and Signed a 12'' for their new imprint 'VA Breaks'. Called 'Buxom', this debuted at number 7 in the breaks chart. The year is indeed looking good. He's just remixed The Propeller Heads, Rennie Pilgrem and Robert Owins and with numerous DJ dates, the future is bright for Smithmonger.

About State of Bengal:

Sam, aka State of Bengal, is one of the Key DJ/ Producers to have emerged from the Cutting Edge British Asian Music scene that emerged in the late 90's that gave birth to the 'Asian Underground' movement.

Aside from his own work, SOB has either worked, played, remixed or toured with numerous world class artists, including Bjork, The Clash, Ronnie Jordan, Massive Attack and the late Ananda Shankar. It was at Anokha that Bjork discovered State Of Bengal’s and pursued him to sign up to her Record label One Little Indian, (on which his Debut album Visual audio was released) and tour on her ‘Homogenic’ album world wide tour in 2001.

Following his Debut album, Sam fulfilled a long time dream in 1998; Sam’s mission to re-introduce the pioneer of '60s Indo-funk, the classical sitarist Ananda Shankar who jammed with Jimi Hendrix and spent a long career at the forefront of fusion and experimentation that pushed the boundaries with his astonishing covers of Light My Fire and Jumping Jack Flash, came to life with a collaboration album with Ananda Shankar entitled ‘Walking On’ followed by a highly successful UK tour.

His last album ‘Tana Tani’, collaboration with Nomadic Baul Singer Paban Das Baul was another life long ambition. Released in 04 It has been described as “a folk culture over 500 years old meeting this digital soundscapes of the 21st century” Song Lines mag who nominated it as best global album of the year and Voted no.2 on XLR8R mag’s Global Break Beat charts 04.

State Of Bengal's unique style continues to be in high demand and plays at clubs and festivals around the globe both as a Dj and with his live band. He was also instrumental in successfully introducing the ‘British Asian Underground’ scene into Mumbai in 1998 and helped to create a huge platform for aspiring Dj’s and producers there.

State Of Bengal is finalizing his new concept Album Skip-IJ. Skip-IJ unleashes yet another side of Sate of Bengal…..with its play ground rhythms, several tracks feature vocalist from around the globe, with its off rhythm and fusion of various street style. His DJ set on his USA dates will give a sampler of his new tracks.

3rd i New York's monthly film and music salon designed by local filmmakers and experimental DJs showcases the works of independent filmmakers of South Asian descent and local djs, musicians and electronica artists. Providing alternative forums for South Asian filmmakers who often have few venues to showcase their work not only increases their visibility, but also provides a social forum for peers and audiences to participate in an ongoing discussion.

I am working on a plan to promote indie-artists and bands in India - through various channels like direct marketing & club representation, etc. I am mostly looking at direct sales for CDs (min. 1000 pieces) through a well-knit network of music lovers, which I am in the process of developing. Basically I am open to any genre - which sounds good but is not commercial and yes, eclectic - becoz Indian music lovers are opening to new sounds. We'll rest market in Clubs & then sell to a captive database of music afficianados in major Indian metros. Anybody who has or knows someone with great music to share - and who wants to capture the big Indian market, pls reply to me with details.
